A newly-discovered asteroid travels around Earth on Friday, at 23:30 at Central European time. NASA reports that the 2018 CB asteroid discovered on the weekend approaches Earth at 64,000 kilometers and is less than one-fifth of the distance between Earth and Moon. The diameter of the irregular shape is estimated at 15-40 meters. According to NASA, it does not pose a threat to Earth, but it is a rare occurrence, asteroids of this magnitude do not approach our planet, at most once or twice a year.
NASA research analyst Paul Chodas says the 2018 CB may be far greater than the asteroid that has just entered the Earth’s atmosphere five years ago in the Chelyabinsk region of Russia. A piece of cube of about 20 meters exploded over a million-square-meter city, damaging 7,000 buildings and injuring 1,500 people.
On Tuesday, another 188,000-square-kilometer Earth landed on the 2018 CB, similar to 2018 CB, which was also discovered by Arizona researchers this weekend. At the end of last week, a much larger asteroid of 500-1000 meters passed near the Earth, although the AJ129 AY129 was far less far than the Earth at 4.2 million kilometers.
