Hungary – A representative survey of emigration among the electorate was commissioned by the Publicus Institute on Sunday News. In recent years, the number of Hungarians working abroad has drastically increased.
On average, almost six family members or close acquaintances have been migrating abroad for long lasting work. Of all the interviewees, three-quarters of them are involved in the work of foreigners, either in person or in close acquaintance with a family member. It is currently more than half a million Hungarians, the exact number ranging from 500 to 700 thousand.
It is thought-provoking and frightening to think that 1,2 million people think home to go abroad. The proportion among young people is extremely high, 40 percent, so more than half a million think they are leaving. They make low pay, an uncertain future, domestic politics and public life as the main reasons for moving away. But in the aggregate, the situation is not better, as 27% of all respondents said that it would leave the country behind domestic politics and public life, which would represent 15 percent of the current total population in Hungary. It would be like the Budapest population would almost disappear.
