Two policemen and one civilian died after a man shot at the Liege in Belgium. Two other policemen were injured, he wrote to the local police, referring to Le Soir. All three deadly victims were women.
At a press conference held at 13 o’clock in the prosecutor’s office, they said they were investigating a terrorist act. “There are elements of the events that suggest a terrorist act,” said Eric Van Der Sypt, spokesman for the prosecution.
According to the prosecution press conference, the man first knocked on the two policemen and then opened fire with their weapons. A young man in a car shot dead in the shooting.
Then the attacker hijacked a cleaning lady at the entrance of a nearby grammar school. There he was shot at the police, then they were done with him. The two other policemen injured in the action, the cleaning lady, were, in turn, saved.
There was information earlier that the police had verified the man who had been attacking them at the press conference, saying that the attacker was following the two police officers. La Libre Belgique earlier wrote that he had shouted “Allahu Akbar!” Before he was shot dead, but that was not confirmed.
For now, it is not clear exactly what is behind the attack. The prosecution could not say more about it for the time being. The authorities will hold a new press conference at 17 o’clock on this matter.
According to RTBF, the 33-year-old attacker was called Benjamin Herman and came out of the prison on Monday. She has been in jail for several minor crimes and theft. Because of radicalism, it was not known to the authorities, but it was investigating whether it might have been radicalized in jail.
The Belgian King and Prime Minister Charles Michel also started the attack. On Wednesday, the relevant grammar school will be closed and one minute silence will be remembered for the victims in Belgium.
