The vicinity of Berlin’s main railway station was closed for a World War II bomb

They closed and evacuated Berlin on Friday near the main station to disarm a World War II bomb.

The 500 kilogram explosive structure was found near a railway station in the city center on a construction site, and an evacuation of 800 meters was discharged during disarming. The measure was announced a week ago, so it did not cause any major disruption when they started closing the area on Friday morning.

Compared to the inner circumscriptions of other major cities, the Berlin Main Railway District rarely resides, but the area includes the central building of the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), a court, a museum, several schools, offices of several companies and some buildings in two hospitals, which workers were expected to leave early afternoon.

The main train station used by 300,000 commuters was reorganized, diverting all long-distance, regional and city trains and buses and trams to the railway station.
