It is not pressure but persuasion to move forward towards the new asylum system of the European Union – said German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday in Berlin after meeting with the Swedish Prime Minister.
Stefan Löfven emphasized that the two countries have similar approaches to asylum, the principle that people in need of protection need to be integrated into society and the labor market and that people who are not in need of protection should be returned to their country.
Responding to the issue of refugee quotas, he said that it should be built on persuasion and, if possible, by June, a new system should be agreed upon, on the basis of solidarity between Member States, a fair distribution of burdens.
“Fair sharing of burdens does not mean that everyone has the same responsibility,” the tasks of the Member States “have to talk to each other”, added Angela Merkel.
The Swedish Prime Minister emphasized that he is experiencing increasing “compromise” in the case of the distribution of refugees.
