The German government condemns experiments on apes and humans with diesel exhaust emissions from diesel cars and requires immediate investigation of what has happened – announced Monday in Berlin.
Speaking to Steffen Seibert, spokesman for government, Chancellor Angela Merkel emphasized that it is perfectly understandable that people are outraged by the “morally unjustifiable” attempts of automobile companies.
The aim of the experiments is also unacceptable, because it is the carmakers’ concern to comply with the emission limit values and not to say that the exhaust gas is not, or is not harmful, at all.
Stephan Haufe, spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Environment, added that there was a good evidence of the harm to the exhaust gases. Archbishop Barbara Hendricks considers animal and human experiments repulsive and astonishing, he said.
The Ministry of Transport calls on the carmakers concerned to immediately inform the public about the trials and investigate the matter. The portfolio also summoned the Volkswagen Group (VW) diesel test committee, which will take the matter on its agenda, announced Ingo Strater, spokesman for the ministry.
According to German press reports, between 2012 and 2015, a research group analyzed the effect of diesel exhaust emissions on monkeys and humans, with the support of VW, Daimler and BMW. In the experiments of the European Research Association on the Environment and Health of the Transport Sector (Europäische Forschungsvereinigung für Umwelt und Gesundheit im Transportsektor – EUGT), ten monkeys and 25 people were examined. The EUGT has since disbanded.
