SHORT HISTORY – Polish Prime Minister: EU Member States have the right to develop their own legal system

Every member state of the European Union has the right to establish its legal system based on its own traditions, respect for national identities must be a basis for trust within the community, Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki said at the European Parliament (EP) Wednesday session in Strasbourg.

In the plenary debate on the future of the European Union, Morawiecki defended the widely criticized Polish judicial reform, under which a third of the current members of the supreme court were forced to be forced to retire.
The Prime Minister spoke of the importance of respect for “constitutional pluralism” and underlined that this is also the fundamental treaty of the Union.
Valdis Dombrovskis, Vice-President of the European Commission, however, emphasized that the Poles took their vote 15 years ago with the EU’s values and principles.
