The Syrian peace talks under the auspices of the United Nations should be resumed sooner, and Russia and Iran should put pressure on the Damascus regime in this regard – the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said Monday, before discussing the Foreign Ministers of the Member States in Luxembourg.
Federica Mogherini briefed in a press conference that the EU is ready to begin planning the reconstruction of the Middle East, as long as the political process is finally on track.
The international community has a common responsibility to put an end to the suffering of the Syrian people, he said.
He added that, at their suggestion, EU foreign ministers are expected to strengthen their common position, mainly with regard to the deployment of chemical weapons.
The High Representative also affected the Iranian nuclear agreement, which is also on the agenda in Luxembourg. He said that the EU will strengthen its “firm, unanimous” commitment to the full implementation of the Convention, but no new sanctions will be taken into account.
He pointed out that maintaining and enforcing the agreement is vital, it is a strategic interest for the European Union.
Finally, Mogherini said that at the meeting they also discussed Russia and the Western Balkans.
